What to Do If You Suspect You’re a Victim of Identity Theft

No one wants to be a victim of identity theft, yet it seems like it is happening more and more often today. If you think you could be a victim of identity theft, do you know what to do about it? What steps can you take to prevent the problem from getting worse or to get your identity back?

It’s very important that you understand that you don’t have to be a silent victim and there are things you can do about it. First, you should contact the banks that you have accounts with. Each bank has their own criminal department that can investigate further regarding your case. Banks and financial institutions do not want to be victims of fraud either and they will help you.

Next you should contact the major credit bureaus. You want to place a fraud alert and also fill out a victim’s statement to be added to your credit file. Here is the contact information for the major three credit bureaus:

TransUnion: 800-680-7289

Equifax: 800-525-6285

Experian: 888-397-3742

Your next step is to contact your creditors. Be sure they know you’ve been the victim of a crime and they can restrict your account access, help you change your passwords or even cancel your accounts, if needed.

Now is the time to file an official police report and also report to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Even if you think it won’t do any good to help your situation, it’s important to have a written report of these crimes.
