Spyware and Protection From Identity Theft

Spyware and protection from identity theft go hand in hand when considering any identity theft protection plan. Spyware is notoriously hard to spot and that is the greatest difficulty in recognizing if your computer is infected and even controlled by spyware. Such is the sophistication and adeptness in the disguise of spyware that infection is not always obvious. There is usually one symptom; at least, to indicate that your computer has probably been infected by spyware which might include any of the following indicators:

  • Pop-up windows – endlessly opening and closing one right after the other.
  • Redirection to different Web addresses in your browser bar from the one you typed in.
  • Unexpected, new toolbars appear in the web browser.
  • Unexpected, new icons appear at the bottom of the screen in your task tray.
  • There is a sudden change to your browser’s home page and every time you attempt to return it to the original, the effort fails.
  • Windows error messages randomly begin to appear without explanation.
  • Computer operations slow dramatically when opening programs or performing tasks like saving files.
  • Using anti-spyware applications is the only sure way to know if your computer has become infected with spyware.

Protection From Identity Theft and Protecting Your Computer…

An anti-spyware application works quite similarly to anti-virus applications. After installation set it up for regular file scanning with an up-to-date anti-spyware program…an up-to-date program for any good to result and stop you being vulnerable, mind you. Criminals constantly update, change, and improve their malicious software so it will remain undetected by your protection programs.

Anti-spyware applications search for spyware based on signatures –indicators of a potentially unsafe program. They don’t all search for the same signature however; different programs look for different signatures so detection of a certain signature by a certain program may be undetected by another one.

To combat this, it is advisable to install on your computer at least two different anti-spyware programs. Use caution in their set up so each program is individually set for scanning the computer at different times otherwise they might conflict with each other.

Any time spent online is threatened by Spyware, which represents one of the greatest dangers to your computer. Take the time to install and configure anti-spyware applications to protect your computer because it is a very important key to protection from identity theft. Without it, the possibility of infection increases to a probability and then the problem is about when and how much damage can be done to your computer and your identity.
