Identity Theft and Dealing with Collection Agencies?
“How do I deal with identity theft and collection agencies? My dad lost his job couple of years ago and the company he was working for was bought out. This company did not destroy its computers once it went out of business and his identity was stolen. Obviously someone stole the old computers. He did a credit report to make sure everything is fine. Problem is that collection agencies have been calling the house for the past 2 years even though we do not own anything, as well as letters in the mail which has our address but the name is incorrect. Some of the letters on the first and last names have been rearranged. It has portions of his name but you can tell its not his real name. What should we do? Should I go ahead and send a “Cease and Desist Letter” to stop the agencies from calling. THIS S**T IS FRUSTRATING. Because once again WE DONT OWE S**T.”

I’m not an attorney but I’m pretty sure you can check with your states attorney general for information on how to deal with harrassing collection agencies. Since you’ve experienced first-hand the upset to your life from having your identity stolen, I would definetely subscribe to an identity theft protection plan now to avoid any further problems.

This might be the answer you are looking for. You will need an Attorney to stop the harrassment. Second, you will need an identity protection plan to prevent Identity Theft ever happening again.
